The first CPU must be installed in socket 0, and the second CPU in socket Module 1.
CAUTION: Intel quad-core CPUs cannot be intermixed with similar dual-core CPUs. CPU speed
and cache size must be identical for all CPUs in a server. To ensure compatibility, whether
upgrading, replacing, or adding an additional CPU, use CPUs with identical part numbers.
Failure to observe this caution results in performance degradation or server failure.
CAUTION: Observe all ESD safety precautions before attempting this procedure. Failure to follow
ESD safety precautions can result in damage to the server.
CPU load order
The server holds up to two dual or quad-core CPUs on the CPU board. The slots on the system
board are labeled Module 0 and Module 1. If the server has only one CPU, it is installed in socket
0. Install the second CPU in socket 1.
See Figure 2 (page 11) for the CPU socket numbers.

Installing a CPU and heat sink module
CAUTION: The pins on the CPU socket are very fragile. Any damage to them may require
replacing the system board.
CAUTION: To avoid damage to the CPU, verify that the plastic tabs on the CPU are pulled fully
out before installation.
CAUTION: To avoid damage to the CPU, handle the CPU only by the edges. Do not touch the
bottom of the CPU, especially the contact area.
CAUTION: To prevent possible server malfunction and damage to the equipment, multiprocessor
configurations must contain CPUs with the same part number.
CAUTION: To prevent thermal instability and damage to the server, do not separate the CPU
from the heat sink after assembling.
The CPU and heat sink ship as separate units and are coupled during installation into the server.
