Aboutthecheckoutprocedure
Beforeyouperformthecheckoutprocedurefordiagnosinghardwareproblems,reviewthefollowing
information.
•Readthesafetyinformationthatbeginsonpage“Safety”onpagev.
•DynamicSystemAnalysis(DSA)providestheprimarymethodsoftestingthemajorcomponentsofthe
server,suchasthesystemboard,Ethernetcontroller,keyboard,mouse(pointingdevice),serialports,and
harddiskdrives.Youcanalsousethemtotestsomeexternaldevices.Ifyouarenotsurewhethera
problemiscausedbythehardwareorbythesoftware,youcanusethediagnosticprogramstoconfirm
thatthehardwareisworkingcorrectly.
•WhenyourunDSA,asingleproblemmightcausemorethanoneerrormessage.Whenthishappens,
correctthecauseofthefirsterrormessage.Theothererrormessagesusuallywillnotoccurthenext
timeyourunDSA.
Important:IfmultipleerrorcodesorlightpathdiagnosticsLEDsindicateamicroprocessorerror,the

•BeforeyourunDSA,youmustdeterminewhetherthefailingserverispartofasharedharddiskdrive
cluster(twoormoreserverssharingexternalstoragedevices).Ifitispartofacluster,youcanrunall
diagnosticprogramsexcepttheonesthattestthestorageunit(thatis,aharddiskdriveinthestorage
unit)orthestorageadapterthatisattachedtothestorageunit.Thefailingservermightbepartofa
clusterifanyofthefollowingconditionsistrue:
–Youhaveidentifiedthefailingserveraspartofacluster(twoormoreserverssharingexternalstorage
devices).
–Oneormoreexternalstorageunitsareattachedtothefailingserverandatleastoneoftheattached
storageunitsisalsoattachedtoanotherserverorunidentifiabledevice.
–Oneormoreserversarelocatednearthefailingserver.
Important:Iftheserverispartofasharedharddiskdrivecluster,runonetestatatime.Donotrun
anysuiteoftests,suchas“quick”or“normal”tests,becausethismightenabletheharddiskdrive
diagnostictests.
