Aboutthecheckoutprocedure
Beforeyouperformthecheckoutprocedurefordiagnosinghardwareproblems,reviewthefollowing
information.
Readthesafetyinformationthatbeginsonpage“Safety”onpagev.
DynamicSystemAnalysis(DSA)providestheprimarymethodsoftestingthemajorcomponentsofthe
server,suchasthesystemboard,Ethernetcontroller,keyboard,mouse(pointingdevice),serialports,and
harddiskdrives.Youcanalsousethemtotestsomeexternaldevices.Ifyouarenotsurewhethera
problemiscausedbythehardwareorbythesoftware,youcanusethediagnosticprogramstoconfirm
thatthehardwareisworkingcorrectly.
WhenyourunDSA,asingleproblemmightcausemorethanoneerrormessage.Whenthishappens,
correctthecauseofthefirsterrormessage.Theothererrormessagesusuallywillnotoccurthenext
timeyourunDSA.
Important:IfmultipleerrorcodesorlightpathdiagnosticsLEDsindicateamicroprocessorerror,the
errormightbeinthemicroprocessororinthemicroprocessorsocket.See“Microprocessorproblems”on

forinformationaboutdiagnosingmicroprocessorproblems.
BeforeyourunDSA,youmustdeterminewhetherthefailingserverispartofasharedharddiskdrive
cluster(twoormoreserverssharingexternalstoragedevices).Ifitispartofacluster,youcanrunall
diagnosticprogramsexcepttheonesthattestthestorageunit(thatis,aharddiskdriveinthestorage
unit)orthestorageadapterthatisattachedtothestorageunit.Thefailingservermightbepartofa
clusterifanyofthefollowingconditionsistrue:
Youhaveidentifiedthefailingserveraspartofacluster(twoormoreserverssharingexternalstorage
devices).
Oneormoreexternalstorageunitsareattachedtothefailingserverandatleastoneoftheattached
storageunitsisalsoattachedtoanotherserverorunidentifiabledevice.
Oneormoreserversarelocatednearthefailingserver.
Important:Iftheserverispartofasharedharddiskdrivecluster,runonetestatatime.Donotrun
anysuiteoftests,suchasquick”or“normal”tests,becausethismightenabletheharddiskdrive
diagnostictests.
