1.Makesurethat:
ThecorrectUSBdevicedriverisinstalled.
TheoperatingsystemsupportsUSBdevices.
2.MakesurethattheUSBconfigurationoptionsaresetcorrectlyintheSetup
utility(see“UsingtheSetuputility”onpage107formoreinformation).
3.IfyouareusingaUSBhub,disconnecttheUSBdevicefromthehuband
connectitdirectlytotheserver.
Solvingpowerproblems
Usethisinformationtosolvepowerproblems.
Powerproblemscanbedifficulttosolve.Forexample,ashortcircuitcanexistanywhereonanyofthe
powerdistributionbuses.Usually,ashortcircuitwillcausethepowersubsystemtoshutdownbecauseof
anovercurrentcondition.Todiagnoseapowerproblem,usethefollowinggeneralprocedure:
Step1.Turnofftheserveranddisconnectallpowercords.
Step2.Checkforloosecablesinthepowersubsystem.Alsocheckforshortcircuits,forexample,ifa
loosescrewiscausingashortcircuitonacircuitboard.
Step3.CheckthelitLEDsonthelightpathdiagnosticspanel(see“LightpathdiagnosticsLEDs”on
page133
).
Step4.Removetheadaptersanddisconnectthecablesandpowercordstoallinternalandexternal
devicesuntiltheserverisattheminimumconfigurationthatisrequiredfortheservertostart(see
“Solvingundeterminedproblems”onpage158).
Step5.Reconnectallacpowercordsandturnontheserver.Iftheserverstartssuccessfully,reseatthe
adaptersanddevicesoneatatimeuntiltheproblemisisolated.
Iftheserverdoesnotstartfromtheminimumconfiguration,see“Power-supplyLEDs”onpage137to
replacethecomponentsintheminimumconfigurationoneatatimeuntiltheproblemisisolated.
SolvingEthernetcontrollerproblems
UsethisinformationtosolvetheEthernetcontrollerproblems.
ThemethodthatyouusetotesttheEthernetcontrollerdependsonwhichoperatingsystemyouareusing.
Seetheoperating-systemdocumentationforinformationaboutEthernetcontrollers,andseetheEthernet
controllerdevice-driverreadmefile.
Trythefollowingprocedures:
Step1.Makesurethatthecorrectdevicedrivers,whichcomewiththeserverareinstalledandthatthey
areatthelatestlevel.
Step2.MakesurethattheEthernetcableisinstalledcorrectly.
Thecablemustbesecurelyattachedatallconnections.Ifthecableisattachedbuttheproblem
remains,tryadifferentcable.
IfyousettheEthernetcontrollertooperateat100Mbps,youmustuseCategory5cabling.
