CHAPTER 5 MANUFACTURER’S INFORMATION
C-6 TRANSMISSION SERVICE
Fluid Level and Condition
1. Bring transmission to normal operating temperature (about 180°OF). Five minutes
of driving, including frequent stops and starts, will usually produce normal uid
temperature.
2. Set gear selector to neutral (N) and withdraw transmission dipstick to check oil level.
Always check oil level with unit on a level surface and WITH FLUID AT
NORMAL OPERATING TEMPERATURE. DO NOT OVERFILL TRANSMISSION.
Overlling can result in transmission damage. It is easy to overll the transmission. To
avoid overlling, add oil in small amounts and recheck level frequently.
3. Withdraw dipstick and examine uid for discoloration and a foul (burned) smell. This
would indicate damaged bands or clutches. If oil has a milky look, water has entered
the transmission. Air bubbles mean there is an air leak in the suction lines. Report
any of these conditions to your supervisor.
4. Check level indicated on dipstick. Add uid as needed to maintain level between
“FULL” and “ADD 1 PINT” marks on the dipstick. Use type Dexron R2.
