1.1 Categorization and Features
The Add 7 product family provides add–on products which allow the implementa-
tion of high or specific requirements from process control and automation techno-
logy.
As a member of the Add 7 product family, the front end module is designed specifi-
cally for the special task of controlling turbines rapidly (different signal types, red-
undancy, rapid detection and preprocessing, etc.). AddFEM can be used to imple-
ment gas, steam, industrial and water turbine control systems. AddFEM can
furthermore be used to implement automation and control applications which re-
quire short system reaction times.
1.1.1 AddFEM
The technical combination possibilities of the AddFEM are manifold. It can be used
with SIMATIC M7 and SIMATIC S7 as well as with SIMADYN D.
The AddFEM is controlled by the higher–level host (SIMATIC M7, SIMATIC S7 or
SIMADYN D) via the PROFIBUS–DP bus system. The control and automation
function is realized in the automation processor.
Signal Inputs and Outputs
The AddFEM has analog and digital inputs and outputs as well as counting pulse
inputs for speed detection.
The number of the different signal types is structured so that one AddFEM module
is sufficient for small applications due to the optimally designed signal mix, whe-
reas several modules can naturally be used for more complex solutions.
The following signal inputs and outputs are available per AddFEM on the individual
signal types:
12 analog inputs of which 6 can be used as current inputs and 6 optionally
as current or voltage inputs (configurable via the SIMATIC Manager or
COM PROFIBUS)
8 analog outputs
15 digital inputs, of which 3 can be used as counting pulse inputs for speed
detection with and without recognition of the direction of rotation
16 digital outputs which can also be used as digital inputs.
The measuring ranges of the analog inputs and analog outputs are designed so
that no additional signal measuring transducers have to be used when the
AddFEM is used for turbine control systems. In addition to the measuring ranges of
0 to 20 mA, 4 to 20 mA and ±20 mA common for current inputs and outputs, a
measuring range of ±30 mA mA is also available. An additional current range
±50 mA at the analog outputs means that actuating elements with a higher current
consumption, such as fuel control valves, can also be controlled without an additio-
