If
the edges are not separated by the time required for the filter period, then
the counting may be off. This type of error can be determined by inputting
both an up-count and down-count Quadrature pulse train at the rated
frequency
. One direction may be correct, while the other direction counts an
incorrect number of pulses. If neither count is what you expect, electrical
noise or a configuration error may exist.
