11. APPENDIX A: HUI / PRO TOOLS LIMITATIONS
11.1 Introduction
11.1.1 Overview
As mentioned earlier Tango communicates with Pro Tool via HUI protocol. This protocol has many
limitations and hence Pro Tools controlling experience is not as rich as it is with the other engines
(Nuendo, Logic etc.). It's important that you are aware of these limitations while working with Pro
Tools.
11.1.2 Greying Out
While you are interacting with Tango you will notice that some graphics objects and texts turn grey.
This indicates that the information is cached and Tango is not receiving any further updates for those
parameters from Pro Tools. The greyed out data being displayed maybe out of date and you shouldn't
rely on it. We don't clear the greyed data as it can be useful. It gives a you general idea what's going on
in your session. For instance, send names don't get updated all the time, however it's unlikely that you
will be renaming them very often.
11.2 MonARC & Channels
11.2.1 MonARC
Tango can only control 32 consecutive Pro Tools' channels at any one time. Simply drag the MonARC
to change witch 32 channels are being controlled.
11.2.2 Channel Names
Tango only receives shortened channel names. They are at most 4 characters long.
11.2.3 Changing Channels
If panner or sends block is active changing channels work as you would expect on the other engines.
However, it is not possible to select the EQ, dynamics or inserts block for channels 9-32 of the 32
available channels. If you try to do this anyway Tango will automatically jump to the panner block of
the active channel. Read more about this limitation in the Plug-in Selection section.
11.3 Metering
11.3.1 Overview
Channel metering received from Pro Tools is very coarse. Tango receives one of 12 possible levels
which are mapped to the following dB values: -∞, -50, -40, -30, -20, -14, -10. -8, -6, -4, -2 and 0. For
instance, if level metering on a channel in Pro Tools is between -40dB and -30dB the level metering on
Tango will read -30dB.
11.4 Panner & Sends
11.4.1 Overview
At any one time only one row of send slots or the panner can display up to date information.
11.4.2 Pan & Send Values
Pan and send values displayed on Tango are very coarse. Although Tango encoders control pans and
sends more precisely the feedback received from Pro Tools is very rough. So the pan position and send
