2. MFP BASIC TECHNOLOGIES
2.1 Overview
Various technologies are used in the MFPs of Toshiba Tec Corporation. This chapter describes the
details of those technologies.
2.1.1 Mechanism
Various functions, such as copying, printing, scanning and fax, are equipped in MFPs. The copying

Overview
1. Scanning
section
Scanner Converts images on an original into electrical signals by means of a
CCD.
2. Image forming
section
Image processing Processes electrical signals of images.
Charging Applies a charge to the surface of the photoconductive drum.
Writing (exposing) Converts electrical signals of images into optical signals and exposes
them on the photoconductive drum.
Development Makes the toner adhere to the photoconductive drum.
Transferring 1st transfer: Transfers the toner on the photoconductive drum to the
transfer belt.
2nd transfer: Transfers the toner on the transfer belt to paper.
Transfer belt
cleaning
The residual toner is forcibly scraped off from the transfer belt by the
blade after the visible images are transferred.
Photoconductive
drum cleaning
Forcibly scrapes off the residual toner from the photoconductive drum
by the blade.
Eliminates the residual charge from the photoconductive drum by
exposing the light of the discharge LED.
Fusing Fuses the toner to the paper by applying heat and pressure.
3. Paper feeding
and transporting
section
Paper feeding,
transporting,
separating,
aligning
Transports sheets of paper from the drawer or the bypass tray one by
one.
4. Paper exit
section and
reverse section
Reversing Reverses the side of the paper from the front to the back.
Paper exiting Exits paper. Transports exiting paper to the Finisher if it is installed.
