2.3.10 Fusing
Fusing is a process to use heat to melt the toner on the paper and to fix it firmly on the paper. The
mechanism varies depending on the models. The fuser unit basically consists of the heat roller, for
applying heat generated from a heat source to the paper, and the pressure roller, for applying pressure
to the paper.
Fig. 2-25
The toner is melted by the heat of the heat roller. The paper is heated and pressed while it is being
passed between the heat roller and the pressure roller and thus the toner is fused on the paper.
A lamp or IH coil is used as the heat source of the fuser unit. Then a thermistor, for detecting and
controlling the temperature of the heat roller, and a thermostat, for preventing abnormal temperature
rise, are attached.
To apply heat from the heat source to the paper, the heat roller which directly heats the paper and the
pressure roller which heats the paper via the fuser belt are embedded. This mechanism varies
depending on the models.
Moreover, to prevent the pressure roller from sticking on the paper, the separation latch or the
separation plate for separating the paper is attached.
2.3.11 Image quality control
The image density and tone reproducibility will vary due to the conditions of use and the deterioration of
the consumables. The image quality control is a process to change the image forming conditions
corresponding to the variation and to maintain the specific image quality. This control is mainly carried
out by the image quality sensor.
A test pattern is developed on the transfer belt. Then the developed test pattern (amount of adhering
toner) is read by the image quality sensor. By feeding back the result of the reading, the image quality is
adjusted. This control is carried out every time printing specific number of sheets.
