Thefellingstageinclear-fellinuencesthewhole
operation.
Thefellingdirectionandstempresentationforextraction
requirescarefulattention,inordertoreducebreakage
andtobeabletopresentawell-delimbedstemforquick
extractionorfurtherprocessing.
Toreducebreakage,andprovidealargerworkingradius,
itispreferabletofelltreesagainststandingtreesto
cushionthefallandreducetheamountofundergrowth
aroundthebaseoftreestobefelled.Thisisachievedby
fellingthetreejustoff-centertoastandingtree,preventing
thefallingtreebecominghungup.
Itispreferredanoperatorhasmanualfellingexperience,
allowingabetterunderstandingoffellingtechniques.
FellingProcess
Thedirectionofthefallisdeterminedbythepositionof
theharvesterhead;thetreeshouldfallinadirectlinewith
thetiltframe.
Positiontheharvesterheadonthetreeaslowaspossible
whilegainingthecorrectfellingangle.Consequently,the
delimbarmsandfeedrollerarmsshouldbefullyopened
andtheharvesterheadinthetiltupposition.Closethe
delimbarmsandfeedrollerarmsoncetheselectedtreeis
positionedintheopening.
Aslightamountofpressureisthenappliedtothetreeto
ensurethesawchainwillnotjamasthetreeisbeingcut.
Whenthesawchainisactivated,bothdelimbandfeed
armscircuitswilloperateattheirhighestsettingtoensure
thetreedoesnotmovewithintheharvesterheadwhile
cuttingistakingplace.Astreamofchipsleavingthesaw
chainboxareaprovidesavisualindicationofthecutting
takingplace.Keepthesawchainactivateduntilthetree
canbefelttomovevertically.Stopthesawchain,which
automaticallyretracts,andapplyforcetothetreeinthe
directionofthefall.
Atfullreachofharvesterhead,treecontrolgetsreduced.
Optimumfellingisachievedusingtheharvesterheadas
closeaspossibleto3/4ofmaximumreach.Duringthese
manoeuvres,thebaseunitshouldremainrmatalltimes.
Areductioninreachwillneedtobeimmediatelyappliedif
thebaseunitbecomesunstable.Ensurethetracksare
onarmfootingatalltimes,avoidinglocatingoneorboth
tracksonstumpswhichcouldallowthecarriertomove
unexpectedlyduringmanoeuvres.

Higherproductionisachievedthroughmaximumground
coveragewithminimaltrackmovement.Thisalsoreduces
environmentalimpact.
Delimbing
Atthispoint,thetreeisreadytobedelimbed.This
involvesrotatingthebaseandfeedingthestemthrough
theharvesterhead,whileobtainingthecorrectdirectionof
thebutt.Oncethebutthasbeenpositioned,theremainder
ofthetreecanbedelimbed,usingthemomentumofthe
harvesterheadtoassistthedelimbingeffort.
Caremustbeexercisedwhenswingingstemsaround,
soasnottoallowcontactwiththeoperator’sstructure,
andtobeawareoftailswingwhichcoulddamageother
treesorstems.

Ensurethedelimbarmsarekeptsharp,andinform,to
reducetheeffortrequiredtoremovelimbs.

Thedelimbingprocedureisaboutbalanceandstem
control,which,whenperfected,givesexcellentresults
andincreasesproduction.
•
Donotfeedthestemthroughtheharvesterheadwhile
thestemisfacingtheoperator’sstructure.
Itisrecommendedthatduringdelimbingtheharvester
headisonlyjusthighenoughtopositionthebuttandclear
objects.Operatingtheharvesterheadtoohighwillresult
inlossofcontrolofthestemand/orstembreakage.
