Whenfellingwhilethinning,placetheharvesterhead
approximatelytwometres(sevenfeet)upthetree,and
thenfeeddownthestem.Thiswillfacilitatedelimbing,
andcreateaclearareafortheharvesterheadtogrip
whenfelling.Thisisthepurposeofthearmsonthe
harvesterhead.
Differentmethods,suchascut-to-length,areusedinorder
togainthemaximummerchantablevolumeandreduce
barkdamagetoremainingtrees.
Apathofstemsapproximatelyfourmetres(13feet)wide
isfelledtoallowaccesstoboththeharvesterheadand
theforwarder.Whilethispathisbeingharvested,stems
onbothsidesofthepathareharvestedandprocessed.
Stemsarestackedoneitherside,readytobeupliftedby
theforwarder.

Decidewheretostackthestems.
First,fellthetreeontheleftandprocessittotheleft
orright.Processthestemsoverthepathandlaythe
stemsontheoppositeside.Thismethodresultsinthe
harvestingslashbeingleftonthepath,thusprovidinga
betterloadbearingsurfaceforbothcarrierandforwarder
andacleanareaforthestacks.
Withthissystem,treescanbefelledconsecutivelyleftand
righttoreducetheamountofharvesterheadmovement,
ensuringstacksarepositionedsotheforwardercaneasily
upliftthem.
Whenstacking,useseparatepilestoidentifygrades,
whichwilleasetheupliftingprocess.
Colormarkingenhancesthisoperationandreducesthe
arearequiredforstock-piling.

Thissystemisusedinconjunctionwithskiddingextraction.
Thepathwayisharvestedinthesamemannerwiththe
samespacing.

thestem,allowingprocessingwithoutdamagetostanding
stems.
Thedirectionoftheprocessedstemsissuchthat
extractionisfacilitatedandbarkdamageisminimized.It
isnotalwayspossibletoprocessoverthepathway,so
harvestingslashisdistributedoverthecompleteswathe.
Stemsneedtobeprocessedandstockpiledwiththe
buttsplacedallowingaccessfromthepathwaybythe
extractioncarrier.
