UseofDoubleCuts
NOTE:Duetopoorformencounteredduringfelling,
delimbingandprocessing,itisnecessarytouse
specialtechniquestobeabletosafelyhandle
stemswithminimaldamagetothecarrier.
Theuseofdoublecutsallowsthetreetofallfreely,
whileminimizingbuttdamage.Itisrecommendedlarger
diametertreesaredoublecuttopreventsawbardamage
and“barberchairs”(3).
Twocuts;afront(orcompression)cut(1)andaback(or
release)cut(2)areadvisedforlargertrees.Usingthe
two-cutmethodmeansthetoportipofthesawbarisnot
travellingoverthedirectionofthefall,whichcancause
damageifthetreemovesforwardanddown.
Positiontheharvesterheadtothefront,orinthedesired
directionoffallofthetree.Makethefrontcutwithnoside
orupwardpressure.Thecutshouldnishwhenthecutting
unitissquarewiththedirectionofthefall.Thebackcut
shouldbehigherthanthefrontcut,allowingthetreetofall
alevelandavoidsplittingwoodtowardsthecuttingunit.A
slightsideandupwardpressure,accordingtotheleanand
sizeofthetree,shouldbeappliedasthetreeisbeingcut.
Thealigningofthetwocutsisimportant,astheremaybe
holdingwoodleftoneitherside,whichmaycausedamage
tothesawunitiftheyarenotparallel.Over-cuttingthe
releasecutwiththefrontcut,canalsostopthecuttingunit
fromreturningifthetreebeginstofall.
Treesofvaryingdiametersmaymeanthealignmentof
theharvesterheadneedstocompensateforthecutsto
beparallel.
