General
Withanyfaultnding,therststepistodecidewhere
toinvestigate.Sometimesthisisobvious,butonother
occasionsalittledetectiveworkwillbenecessary.The
maintenanceoperatorwhomakeshalfadozenhaphazard
adjustmentsorreplacementsmaybesuccessfulincuring
afault(oritssymptoms),butwillbenonethewiserifthe
faultoccursagainandmaywellhavespentmoretimeand
moneythanwasnecessary.
Acalmandlogicalapproachwillbemoresatisfactoryin
thelongrun.
Alwaystakeintoaccountanywarningsignsor
abnormalitiesthatmayhavebeennoticedintheperiod
precedingthefault,i.e.powerloss,highorlowgauge
readings,unusualnoises,andrememberthatfailureofa
componentsuchasacircuitbreakerofshaftsealmay
onlybeapointertosomeunderlyingfault.Whateverthe
fault,certainbasicprinciplesapply.Theseareasfollows:
1.Verifythefault.
Thisissimplyamatterofbeingsureyouknowwhatthe
symptomsarebeforestartingwork.Thisisparticularly
importantifyouareinvestigatingafaultforsomeone
elsewhomaynothavedescribeditveryaccurately.
2.Don'toverlooktheobvious.
Forexample,ifafunctionwillnotoperate,isitthe
solenoid,wiring,ornohydraulicpressure?Ifan
electricalfaultisindicated,checkthediagnostic
indicatorsbeforediggingintothewiring.
3.Curethedisease,notthesymptom.
Replacingashaftsealmaystoptheimmediateleak,
butthecausemaybetoomuchbackpressure.
4.Donottakeanythingforgranted.
Beawarea(new)componentmayitselfbedefective
(especiallyifitsbeenrattlingaroundinthetoolbox
formonths),anddonotleavecomponentsoutofa
faultdiagnosissequencejustbecausetheyarenewor
recentlytted.Whenyoudonallydiagnoseadifcult
fault,youwillprobablyrealizethatalltheevidence
wastherefromthestart.
