QuarterCutting
Thismethodisusedonvariousoccasionstogainbetter
controlwhenfelling.Useasawcut,placedatthebaseof
thetreeinthedirectionofthefall,approximatelyaquarter
ofthediameterintothetree.Theharvesterheadisthen
movedtothebackofthetreereadyforfalling.
CAUTION:Preventpossibleinjurywhilefelling.
Alwaysworkononetreeatatimeandcomplete
thetreecut.Failuretofollowthesafety
precautionsmayleadtoseriousinjury.
Ensurethebackcut(2)isplacedhigherinthetreethan
thefrontcut(1);approximatelyone-quarterofthetree
diameter.Whenplacingthesecuts,ensuretheyare
parallel,creatingahingeeffect,whichwillpreventloss
ofcontrol.
Insomecases,severalquartercutswillpreventthetree
snappingofftoosoon.Thismethodisusedonlargebutt
ares,heavyleaners,badlysweptbutts,multileaders,
andanyothersituationwheretheoperatorrequiresmore
controlduringfelling.

FallingMulti-leaders
‘Crutched’treescanbecuteitheratapointwherethey
separate,or,ifonesideisofsmalldiameter,itcanbe
lifteduntilthecrutchsplits.
Base-crutchedtreesmayneedtofelledseparatelyifthe
splitlineisclosetotheground.
Assessthesituationcarefullyandidentifywhetherthe
treeissoundatthebase;ifso,completefellingmaybe
anoption.
Ifsignsofrot(4)exist,eachleaderrequiresindividual
removal.Thisisdoneinaconventionalmanner,exceptat
agreaterheight.
CAUTION:Preventpossibleinjurywhilefelling
multi-leadertrees.Cautionmustbeexercised
toensureotherleadersdonotbreakaway
unexpectedly.Failuretofollowthesafety
