19 Appendix A: Glossary
Temporary inability to breath.
The collapse or closure of a lung resulting in reduced or absent gas
exchange.
The continuous flow of gas responsible for replenishing oxygen and
removing carbon dioxide (CO
2
) from the patient circuit.
Time triggered, time cycled pressure SIPPVs at two separate pressure
levels.
Breaths-per-minute (applies to each spontaneous, triggered and
mandatory).
A digit representing the sum of the correct digits in a piece of stored or
transmitted digital data, against which later comparisons can be made to
detect errors in the data.
Communication interface with system.
Can occur due to the following respiratory episodes:
• Low tidal volume (TV) ventilation
• Inadequate positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP)
• Use of high FiO
2
(absorption atelectasis)
Digital Input
transducers, and mechanical equipment to other electrical circuits and
devices.
Fraction of Inspired Oxygen. A fraction of oxygen in the volume being
measured.
Patient attachment for delivering CPAP, used with nasal prongs and mask.
Ingress Protection rating.
Infrared radiation [wavelength greater than 700 nanometers (nm)].
Leakage from patient or system tubings
Low Noise Cable Sensors (Masimo trade mark).
Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
Non-Volatile Random-Access Memory.
Delivers oxygen directly into the common gas outlet without passing
through a flowmeter or vaporizer.
Post-anesthesia care Unit sometimes referred to as Post-Anesthesia
Recovery (PAR).
