Advanced Automated Osmometer User’s Guide
The scanner is also capable of reading the following barcodes:
• Code 93
• GS1-128
• Industrial 2 of 5
• UPC/EAN
Input/Output interfaces
One Ethernet port allows connection to a local area network. Four USB
ports allow connection to external devices, such as a computer, USB
drive, external printer, keyboard, mouse, or external
barcode scanner.
Temperature and humidity measurement circuit (inside)
The temperature and humidity circuit continuously measures the temper-
ature and humidity inside the instrument.
Osmometer module
The osmometer determines the osmolality of a 100 µL test sample using
the freezing point depression method. It has the capacity to test 20 sam-
ple tubes before requiring reloading.
NOTE The plastic sample tube used in the osmometer is designed for
single-use only and must be discarded after one test. The
mechanical impact used to nucleate the sample state change
during the test deforms and cracks the plastic tube. Reusing the
cracked tube can result in sample leaking out into the cooling
chamb er. This contaminates the cooling chamber. It can also
produce inaccurate test results or errors.
After the automated pipetting system deposits a sample into the single-
use disposable sample tube, the turntable automatically rotates to the test
position. The sample cooling chamber raises so that it interfaces with
the sample tube, and the sample probe lowers into the liquid sample.
Then a solid-state thermoelectric (Peltier) cooler super-cools the sample.
Following this, a mechanical impact nucleates a state change. The
osmolality is determined by measuring the sample temperature during
the state change. At the completion of the test, the sample tube is
removed from the cooling chamber. Lastly, a disposable wiper ring
