Troubleshooting Control Unit IV Reference Manual

6.5.2 Tap commands
The Control Unit offers a manual tap control interface. The commands
tap
and
grp
are used
to view the current setting of an individual tap or group; the commands
stap
and
sgrp
are
used to set the tap or group to a new tier.
If you are unable to change the tier setting for a tap or a group of taps:
1. Make sure you are setting the subscriber tap to a tier that is allowed in your type of
system. If the tier is not compatible, you will see the message Status not recognized.
The Control Unit is set up for a multi-tier system (tiers a-h) or for an off-basic-pay (OBP)
system. In each system, you can only use the tier settings that are compatible with the
system type. Check the spelling of the tier you entered.
2. Make sure the taps address is within the Control Units limits (see Chapter 1 for
capacity and group size). If it is not, you will see the message Group (or tap) out of
range. Check the format of the command (see Chapter 4).
3. If the Control Unit accepted the new tier but the change was not transmitted to the
network, you may simply have not waited long enough for the Control Unit to refresh the
subscriber data. The following commands can change a subscribers tier setting, but not
all commands take effect immediately. See Chapter 4 for more details.
The
sgrp
command does not immediately transmit the status to the cable network.
To force the Control Unit to transmit the data immediately for a group, use the
sendgrp
command.
The
setseq
command positions the sequencer on the specified group and can update
it at the same time.
The
stap
command sets and immediately refreshes the status of a subscriber.
4. If you still cannot set a tap or a group of taps to a tier, check the FSK carrier
(see section 6.2), and check the addressable taps programming.
5. If the problem persists, contact Electrolines technical support department.
6.5.3 Subscriber status errors
Subscriber has status XXX
If the status XXX was given to some subscribers in an OBP system, there may be a
problem with the battery. The status XXX is an unknown value and is not allowed in an
exclusive tiering system. It means that the basic and pay tiers are activated at the same time.
Note that at startup, if the battery is discharged, some or all taps may take on unknown
values (see Chapter 4).
1. If the tap is entered in the billing system, set the tap to the correct tier.
2. Check the battery and replace it if necessary.
3. If the problem affects many taps, reload the subscriber status data either from the billing
system or from a recent backup copy (see Chapter 5 for backup procedures).
4. If the problem persists, contact Electrolines technical support department.
