time the <Enter> key is pressed if you are using the Terminal protocol and if the redundancy
failure notification feature is enabled (see section 3.7.2).
Each command that is processed by the master unit is also checked against the backup unit in
a redundancy system. If the backup unit fails to provide the same response to a command as
the master unit, you will see the message Backup response error. See Chapter 6 for specific
troubleshooting instructions for the redundancy system.
3.7.4 Synchronizing the master and backup units
The synchronization (
sync
) command applies only to redundancy systems. You should use
the
sync
command to synchronize the memory of both Control Units in a redundancy system
when you first connect the backup unit, or whenever one of the units fails.
Note that the
sync
command can only be used if the two units have identical setups
(see section 3.7.1), including the same password on the COM ports. Moreover, it is
important to execute the
sync
command on the unit that contains the most up-to-date
subscriber status data.
The
sync
command copies the subscriber statuses from one unit to the other. Note that the
synchronization process takes a few minutes since a large amount of information is
transferred at once.
To synchronize two Control Units:
1. Identify the unit that contains the most up-to-date subscriber status data. This is usually
the current master unit, but it may be the backup unit if the units were reset (powered off,
then on).
2. Reset the redundancy circuitry in both units. First power off both units, then power them
back on one at a time. Wait until the first unit has fully booted before powering on the
other unit. Note that both units must remain off for at short period. See Chapter 6 for
details on resetting the redundancy circuitry.
3. Log on to COM 3 on the Control Unit with the most up-to-date data (see step 1).
4. Once you have logged on, type
sync
at the CU4> prompt and press <Enter>. Answer
<y> to the question Are you sure? to begin the synchronization process.
A message indicating that the process is in progress (Download...) will be sent to COM 3
on the master unit. A message will also be sent to COM 3 on the backup unit (Upload...).

All connection error messages will be sent to COM 3. If the redundancy cable is not
properly connected, the message No backup unit present will appear. However, if the
synchronization cable is improperly connected, the message Backup unit isn’t
responding will appear. If the synchronization process is successful, the message DONE
will appear. See Chapter 6 for complete troubleshooting information.
