Maintenance Control Unit IV Reference Manual
5-4 529-0004 Ver.3
5.2 Expansion slots
The Control Unit IV model CU4, has three expansion slots located near the front panel (see
Figure 5-3). Some units have a RAM Expansion Board preinstalled in the central expansion
slot, leaving one free expansion slot on each side.
5.2.1 Adding expansion boards
On the Control Unit IV, you can insert expansion boards in the free expansion slots on the
motherboard to increase its memory or to enhance its features. Note that only expansion
boards provided by Electroline can be installed in the Control Unit. For installation
procedures, refer to the documentation supplied with the expansion board you are adding.
5.2.2 Removing or replacing the RAM Expansion Board
The plug-in RAM Expansion Board provides an additional 1 MB of memory in the Control
Unit. If this board is installed in the Control Unit and you need to remove the RAM board
from its expansion slot, follow these steps.
Important:
Handle the board only at an anti-static workstation, and use a grounded wrist strap to
prevent damage to the board due to electrostatic discharge (ESD).
To remove the RAM Expansion Board:
1. Using a pair of pliers, pinch the rounded end of one of the plastic supports that connect
the RAM board to the unit’s motherboard. While pinching the end of the support, grasp
the edge of the RAM board and gently pull up on it. This will release the board from the
notched groove in the support.
2. Repeat step 1 to release the board from the second plastic support.
3. Lift up the metal handle on the edge of the RAM Expansion Board so that you can fit
your fingers around it. Using the handle, pull firmly and carefully upwards to work the
RAM board’s 64-pin connector out of the central expansion slot. Make sure you do not
rock or twist the board as this will bend the connector pins and create resistance.
4. To remove the plastic supports from the holes in the motherboard, pull up on them
firmly. Be careful not to damage the motherboard.
To install a new RAM Expansion Board:
1. Unplug the cable that connects the Control Unit to the host computer.
2. Make a backup copy of the content of the Control Unit’s memory by downloading it to
another computer (see section 5.3.1 for details on the
download
command).
3. If your firmware version is not 3.01 or higher, print out the Control Unit’s current setup
(
info
command) to be able to restore the unit’s settings after the upgrade.
4. Turn off the Control Unit and unplug the power cord.
