Term Definition
address
See Electroline address
backup unit
In a redundancy setup with two Control Units connected by a
redundancy cable, the backup unit is the unit that takes over if
there is a problem with the master unit. See also Redundancy
system.
default state
State that all taps enter into for a short period when they are
powered on or reset.
Electroline address
Numbering system composed of two parts: group and tap.
The group number identifies a set of connections
(CLEARPath modules or subscriber ports) within the
network. The tap number identifies a connection
(CLEARPath module or RF port where the subscriber’s drop
is connected), and represents the tap’s place within the group.
The unique combination of a group number and a tap number
constitutes the Electroline address. See also group and tap
number.
exclusive tier
Cable service that cannot be combined with another service.
For example, either basic or pay service, not both, is
authorized for a given subscriber.
group
Part of the Electroline address. A number assigned to a set of
subscriber connections so that the decoder can identify them.
According to the number of tiers, a group contains 16 or 64
subscribers.
inclusive tier
Cable service that can be combined with another service. For
example, both tier A and tier D may be authorized at the same
time for a given subscriber.
master unit
In a redundancy setup with two Control Units connected by a
redundancy cable, the master unit is the primary unit. The
redundancy cable connector labeled
MASTER
is connected to
this unit. See also Redundancy system.
null modem cable
Cable with crossover wiring used for connecting two similar
types of devices, e.g. two DTE (data terminal equipment) or
two DCE (data circuit-terminating equipment) devices.
