Crankshaft Main Bearing Journal
Clearance
NOTE: Crankshaft main bearing journals must be within
specifications before checking journal clearance.
1. Remove the crankshaft main bearing caps and
bearings.
2. Lay a piece of Plastigage® across the face of each
crankshaft main surface.
NOTE: Do not turn the crankshaft while doing this
procedure.
3. Install and remove the crankshaft main bearing cap.
4. Verify the crankshaft journal clearance.
• If it is out of specification, replace as necessary
Bearing Inspection
Inspect bearings for the following defects. Possible
causes are shown:
• Cratering – fatigue failure (A)
• Spot polishing – improper seating (B)
• Scratching – dirty (C)
• Base exposed – poor lubrication (D)
• Both edges worn – journal damaged (E)
• One edge worn – journal tapered or bearing not
seated (F)
