9.6 Logging In to a Server over a Network Port Using
PuTTY
Use PuTTY to remotely log in to a server over a local area network (LAN) and configure and
maintain the server.
Ensure that the following requirements are met:
l The local PC is connected to the management network port of the server through a
network cable.
l PuTTY is installed.
You can download PuTTY from chiark website. You are advised to use the latest version
of PuTTY, otherwise you may fail to log in to the server.
l IP address of the server.
l User name and password for logging in to the server.
Procedure
Step 1 Set an IP address and a subnet mask or add route information for the PC to communicate with
the server.
Step 2 On the PC command-line interface (CLI), run the following command to check whether the
server is reachable:
Ping Server IP address
Step 3 Double-click PuTTY.exe.
The PuTTY Configuration window is displayed, as shown in Figure 9-16.
