•Microprocessorsaretobeinstalledonlybytrainedtechnicians.Important:Alwaysusethe
microprocessorinstallationtooltoinstallamicroprocessor.Failingtousethemicroprocessorinstallation
toolmaydamagethemicroprocessorsocketsonthesystemboard.Anydamagetothemicroprocessor
socketsmayrequirereplacingthesystemboard.
•Theserversupportsuptotwomulti-coremicroprocessors,whicharedesignedfortheLGA2011socket.

•Donotremovethefirstmicroprocessorfromthesystemboardwhenyouinstallthesecond
microprocessor.
•Whenyouinstallthesecondmicroprocessor,youmustalsoinstalladditionalmemory,theairbaffle,and

•Toensureproperserveroperationwhenyouinstallanadditionalmicroprocessor,usemicroprocessors
thathavethesameQuickPathInterconnect(QPI)linkspeed,integratedmemorycontrollerfrequency,core
frequency,powersegment,internalcachesize,andtype.
•Mixingmicroprocessorsofdifferentsteppinglevelswithinthesameservermodelissupported.
•Whenmixingmicroprocessorswithdifferentsteppinglevelswithinthesameservermodel,youdonot
havetoinstallthemicroprocessorwithloweststeppinglevelandfeaturesinmicroprocessorsocket1.
•Bothmicroprocessorvoltageregulatormodulesareintegratedonthesystemboard.
•Readthedocumentationthatcomeswiththemicroprocessortodeterminewhetheryouhavetoupdate
theserverfirmware.Todownloadthelatestlevelofserverfirmwareandothercodeupdatesforyour
server,gotohttp://www.lenovo.com/support.
•Themicroprocessorspeedsareautomaticallysetforthisserver;therefore,youdonothavetosetany
microprocessorfrequency-selectionjumpersorswitches.
•Ifthethermal-greaseprotectivecover(forexample,aplasticcaportapeliner)isremovedfromtheheat
sink,donottouchthethermalgreaseonthebottomoftheheatsinkorsetdowntheheatsink.Formore

Note:Removingtheheatsinkfromthemicroprocessordestroystheevendistributionofthethermal
greaseandrequiresreplacingthethermalgrease.
