Warnings and Safety Precautions
The following Warning and Caution icons appear frequently throughout this manual. The
meanings of these icons are as follows.
WARNING
This indicates the possibility of death, serious injury or medium-grade
injury if the described precaution is ignored.
CAUTION
This indicates the possibility of minor injury if the described precaution is
ignored. It also indicates the possibility of physical damage to property
and assets, and resulting invalid analytical results.
To minimize the potential of personal injury and physical damage to property and assets, adopt
the following preventative measures.
1. Before starting any work on the detector, thoroughly understand the content of this
manual.
2. Install this instrument in a sufficiently well-ventilated laboratory. Prevent any mobile
phase that contains volatile or flammable solvent from entering the work space.
3. Connect the detector's emission port to a fume hood. If this measure is not possible,
extract exhaust from the laboratory by other methods.
4. If mobile phase contains volatile or flammable solvent, do not use naked flames or
sparks.
5. If mobile phase leaks, turn the instrument OFF, and immediately remedy the situation.
6. Connect all instrument components to the same power line grounded directly to the
ground.
7. Electrical connections will be exposed when covers are removed from the detector.
When work on the detector must be performed with the covers removed but the
power still on, take care not to touch the exposed contacts.
8. Many organic solvents and buffer solutions are toxic. Learn about the toxicity of all
mobile phases in use.
9. The toxicity of the many samples monitored by this detector is not fully known. When
in doubt about a certain sample, or when the detector might be contaminated, remove
any contamination from the detector before starting work.
10. When handling mobile phase or when operating the detector, wear protective goggles.
Facilities for rinsing or washing the eyes and a sink must be provided near the
instrument. If sample or mobile phase comes into direct contact with the eyes or skin,
immediately wash off the area of contact with running water, and consult a physician.
