However, causing a structure to stretch in one direction will cause it to contract in
the perpendicular directions. This effect occurs in the elastic region as well as
beyond it. Within the elastic region, the effect is reversible. Pull on the cylinder
and it “necks” down. Relax the pull and the cylinder returns to its original length
and diameter. The ratio of the transverse strain to the primary (tensile) strain is
called Poisson’s Ratio.
