Starting and stopping the engine
Note
Electrical components with a high power
consumption are switched o temporarily
when the engine starts.
When starting with a cold engine, noise
levels may briey increase. This is quite nor-
mal, and no cause for concern.
Turning o the engine
Bring the vehicle to a full stop ››› .
Vehicles with an automatic gearbox: Switch
on the parking lock by pressing button P.
Apply the electronic parking brake.
Briey press the start button.
Car wash function (hybrid vehicles)
When the ignition is turned o with gear N ac-
tivated, the vehicle can roll for the next 30 mi-
nutes. After that time, if the vehicle is stopped
the parking lock P activates automatically. The
corresponding warning message is displayed
on the instrument cluster display one minute
before this happens.
WARNING
Never switch o the engine while the vehicle
is in motion. This could cause loss of control
of the vehicle, accidents and serious injury.
The airbags and seatbelt pretensioners do
not work when the ignition is switched o.
The brake servo does not work when the
engine is switched o. Therefore, when the
engine is switched o, the brake pedal has to
be pressed harder to stop the vehicle.
The power steering does not work when
the engine is switched o. When the engine
is switched o, more force is required to turn
the steering wheel.
If the ignition is switched o, the steering
column lock may activate, leaving the vehicle
impossible to control.
WARNING
Always take the key with you when leaving
the vehicle. This is particularly important if
there are children in the vehicle, as they
might otherwise be able to start the engine
or use power-operated equipment (e.g. the
electric windows), which could cause injuries.
NOTICE
If the vehicle is stopped and the Start-Stop
system switches o the engine, the ignition
remains switched on. Before leaving the ve-
hicle, make sure that the ignition is switched
o, otherwise the battery will discharge.
If the engine has been driven at high speed
for a prolonged period of time, it may over-
heat when switched o. To avoid damage, al-
low the engine to run for approximately two
minutes in neutral before switching it o.
Note
After stopping the engine, the radiator fan
may continue to run for up to 10 minutes,
even with the ignition switched o. It may
also start up again if the coolant tempera-
ture rises due to heat building-up under the
engine compartment or if the engine gets
even hotter due to prolonged exposure to
sunlight.
Electronic immobilizer
The electronic immobiliser helps to prevent
the engine from being started with an unau-
thorised key and, consequently, the vehicle
being put in motion.
The vehicle key has an integrated chip which
automatically deactivates the electronic im-
mobiliser if there is a valid key inside the pas-
senger compartment.
