2.1.6 Paper Handling
Paper handlin
on the St
lus COLOR 440, 640, and 740 is performed
b
the automatic sheet feeder
ASF
and paper feed mechanisms. The
ASF is desi
ned to prevent more than one sheet of paper from bein
fed into the printer at a time. After the ASF has introduced a sin
le
sheet into the printer, the paper feed mechanism takes over. It
mana
es the paper durin
printin
, and also e
ects the pa
e when
printin
is complete.
Since the paper feed mechanism and ASF share the same motor, the
printer needs a wa
of transmittin
power to the ASF durin
loadin
.
This is done b
the ASF transmission.
ASF transmission
Normall
, when the the PF motor is runnin
, it turns onl
the
ears on
the ri
ht-hand side of the ASF transmission, as shown in Fi
ure 2-7.
These
ears include the PF roller drive
ear and the e
ect roller drive
ear, which are both parts of the paper feed mechanism.
When the Load/E
ect switch is pressed or the printer receives
instructions to load a new sheet of paper, the carria
e unit moves all the
wa
to the left and presses a
ainst the sheet feeder clutch. The clutch
then pushes a
ainst the slidin
ear, which is mounted on the same
axle as the platen roller drive
ear. This causes the slidin
ear to
mesh with the ASF roller transmission
ears. In this wa
, the PF motor
drives the ASF durin
paper loadin
.
