Abbreviations:
EPROM: Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory
OTPROM: One-Time Programmable Read-Only Memory
RAM: Random Access Memory
ROM: Read-Only Memory
SRAM: Static Random Access Memory
At startup, the behaviour of the printer is decided by the possible
existence of a startup (autoexec) fi le (that is, a program that automati-
cally starts running when the printer is switched on) somewhere in
the printer’s memory. There are three major possibilities:
A The printer is fi tted with the Intermec Shell Enhanced fi le-
managing program, which allows the operator to choose between
a variety of applications and functions.
B The printer is fi tted with no startup fi le at all.
C The printer is fi tted with a custom-made application program that
is design to perform a specifi c task, for example to print tickets,
baggage tags, or product labels for a certain company.
There can be one startup fi le stored in each of the following parts
of the printer’s memory: RAM, ROM, and memory cards (option).
If there are startup fi les stored in more than one place, they will be
used with the following priority:
1. Dos-formatted memory cards (SRAM).
2. Printer’s RAM memory.
3. Non DOS-formatted memory cards (SRAM or OTPROM).
4. Printer’s ROM memory, for example the configuration
EPROMs.
This implies that if you have a startup fi le stored in the confi guration
EPROMs and insert a memory card in the optional memory card
adapter (see Chapter 10) with another startup fi le before you switch
on the printer, the startup fi le of the memory card will be used.
