Host Access Group Use Case Description
Cluster of application servers
host access group
Multiple iSCSI initiators in multiple application servers are assigned
to the host access group. Typically, multiple-server host access
groups are used for application/hypervisor server clusters that must
have shared access to volumes.
Each iSCSI initiator is identified by an IQN that is unique within the
IP SAN.
NOTE: Changes to the host access group (e.g., changing IQNs, names, enabling, or changing CHAP) requires user to
disconnect and re-establish iSCSI sessions on the application server. Changes on the application server require the
changes to be mimicked on the plugin as well.
Volumes
A volume can only be assigned to a single host access group at a time.
Assigning volumes to the Allow Access
group is the equivalent to the volume being accessible to all application servers
that connect to the Acuity vPG. Assigning the same volumes for concurrent read/write access to multiple servers that are
not cluster aware will likely result in data inconsistencies or data integrity issues on the volume.
Although a volume’s host access group can be changed, if the new host access group does not include the application
server IQNs that are already connected to the volumes, the volumes will be forcibly disconnected from those
servers/initiators. Similarly, re-assigning volumes to the Deny Access group will forcibly disconnect the volume from
application server(s) connected to the volume.
NOTE:
When creating a volume + datastore with the Pivot3 vCenter Plugin, Mutual CHAP between the Host Access Group and
the volume will not succeed. For more information on this issue, consult Plugin Troubleshooting.
Create a Host Access Group
Log in to vSphere Web Client and locate the IQN of the node to connect the volume’s datastore to.
a. Click on the node level and navigate to Manage > Storage > Storage Adapters. Choose the iSCSI Software
Adapter. The IQN is located on the Properties tab of this screen.
In the Plugin, Provisioning tab > Data Services view > Host Access Group tab > Create Host Access Group.
Enter the IQNs in the Initiator List fields, then click the + to add another node to the Host Access Group.
