Acuity ESXi Hosts and Maintenance Mode
Before an ESXi host goes into Maintenance Mode, its guest VMs must be migrated to a different host. The cluster type
where the host resides can affect the procedure this follows. The table below explains the configurations and their
migration processes, as well as specific user actions if applicable.
ESXi Host’s Cluster Type Host Migration Procedure
vSphere DRS-protected cluster
vCenter will automatically use vMotion to migrate all guest VMs on the
Acuity ESXi host to another member of the cluster.
Cluster without vSphere DRS
protection
User must manually shut down all guest VMs on the Acuity ESXi host or
migrate them to another member of the cluster.
Not a member of a cluster User must manually shut down all guest VMs on the Acuity ESXi host or
migrate them to another Acuity ESXi host.
To enable DRS protection, select the ESXi cluster and navigate to Configure tab > Services > vSphere DRS.
NOTE: If the Power Management’s Automation Level is set to Automatic
in vCenter, the hosts may enter Standby Mode and
Power off if the vPG is shut down from the Plugin.
Pivot3 recommends leaving the Power Management Automation Level setting to Off.
CRITICAL: Never move a Pivot3_VM. It is tied to the host and must not be migrated.
Adding ESXi Hosts & Datastores
CRITICAL: When adding a new host to a vPG, configure the iSCSI adapter with the new alias before adding the host to
the vPG. If the iSCSI alias or name is configured after the node has been added to the vPG, a manual rescan will be
required to see the new datastore from the new host.
For vPGs With vSTAC Storage
CRITICAL: When adding a new host to a vPG, configure the iSCSI adapter with the new alias before adding the host to the
vPG. If the iSCSI Alias is configured after the node has been added to the vPG, a manual rescan will be required to
see the new datastore from the new host.
Log in to vCenter Web Client on the new host and update the host’s iSCSI Alias.
