9.1Radaroverview
Radarisusedtoprovideinformationthatcanhelpyoutotrack
targetsandmeasuredistancesandbearings.
RadioDetectionAndRanging(RADAR)isusedatseatodetectthe
presenceofobjects(knownas‘targets’)atadistance,andifthey
aremoving,detecttheirspeed.
Radarworksbytransmittingradiopulses,thendetectingreections
ofthesepulses(echoes)fromobjectsintheareaanddisplayingthe
reectionsastargetsonyourdisplay.
Untilyouarefamiliarwithinterpretingtheradardisplay,every
opportunityshouldbetakentocomparetheradarscreenpatterns
withvisualtargets,suchasotherboats,buoysandcoastal
structures.Youshouldpractiseharborandcoastalnavigationduring
daylighthoursandinclearweatherconditions.
Digitalradar
Yourmultifunctiondisplaycanbeusedwithdigitalradarscanners.
Digitalradarscannersprovidearangeofadvantagesoveranalog
radar,makingiteasiertodiscernobjectsaroundyourvessel.
Digitalradarscannersprovide:
•Improvedtargetdetection.
•Full-colorimage.
•DualRangeoperation.
•SuperHDoption.Thiseffectivelyincreasesthetransmitterpower
byafactorofatleasttwo,andreducesthebeamwidthbya
similaramount.
Note:YoumustconnectaSuperHDradarscannerinorderto
usetheSuperHDoption.
9.2Radarscannerpowermodes
Theradarscannerhasanumberofpowermodes.
Theradarscannericoninthedatabarindicatesthepowerstatusof
theradarscanner.Thefollowingisanexplanationofeachstatus:

(TX)
Rotatingicon,signifyingthatthescanner
isonandtransmitting.WhenSCANNER
issettoON,selectthismodetoactivate
thescanner.Thisistheusualmodeof
operation.
Standby
(STBY)
Staticicon,indicatingthatthescanneris
onbutnottransmitting,andtheantennais
notrotating.Antennadoesnotrotate,the
scannerdoesnottransmitandtheradar
dataisremovedfromthescreen.Thisisa
powersavemodeusedwhenradarisnot
neededforshorttimeperiods.Whenyou
returntotransmitmode,themagnetron
doesnotneedtowarmup.Thisisthe
defaultmode.
Off Scannerpoweredoffwhenradarnot
required,butdisplayisinuseforother
applications,suchasthechart.When
selected,thesystemcountsdown.During
thistimeyoucannotre-powerthescanner.
Timed
Transmit
Scannerswitchesbetweenon/transmitting,
andstandbymode.Scannergoesinto
powersavemodewhenconstantuseof
radarisnotrequired.
