9.4Radardisplayoverview
Withyourradarscannerconnectedandtheradarintransmitmode,
theradarpictureprovidesamap-likerepresentationofthearea
inwhichtheradarisoperating.
Typically,yourboat’spositionisatthecentreofthedisplay,andits
deadaheadbearingisindicatedbyaverticalheadingline,known
astheShip’sHeadingMarker(SHM).
On-screentargetsmaybelarge,small,brightorfaint,dependent
onthesizeoftheobject,itsorientationandsurface.Ifusingan
analogradarscanner,strongesttargetreturnsaredisplayedin
yellowwithweakerreturnsintwoshadesofblue.Ifusingadigital
radarscanner,strongertargetreturnsshowasdifferentcolorsfrom
arangeof256colors,providingbetterclarity.Beawarethatthesize
ofatargetonscreenisdependentonmanyfactorsandmaynot
necessarilybeproportionaltoitsphysicalsize.Nearbyobjectsmay
appeartobethesamesizeasadistantlargerobjects.
