11 Calibration
11.1 Overview
Description
Stonex
®
instrumentsaremanufactured,assembledandadjustedtoahighquality.Quick
temperaturechanges,shockorstresscancausedeviationsanddecreasetheinstrumentaccu‐
racy.Itisthereforerecommendedtocalibratetheinstrumentfromtimetotime.Thiscanbe
doneinthefieldbyrunningthroughspecificmeasurementprocedures.Theproceduresare
guidedandhavetobefollowedcarefullyandpreciselyasdescribedinthefollowingchapters.
Someotherinstrumenterrorsandmechanicalpartscanbeadjustedmechanically.
Electroniccalibration
Thefollowinginstrumenterrorscanbecheckedandcalibratedelectronically:
• Horizontalcollimationerror,alsocalledline‐of‐sighterror.
• Verticalindexerror,andsimultaneouslytheelectroniclevel.

Fordeterminingtheseerrors,itisnecessarytomeasureinbothfaces,buttheprocedurecanbe
startedinanyface.
Mechanicalcalibration
Thefollowinginstrumentpartscanbecalibratedmechanically:
• Circularlevelontheinstrumentandtribrach.
•Laserplummet.
• Screwsonthetripod.

Duringthemanufacturingprocess,theinstrumenterrorsarecarefullydeterminedandsetto
zero.Asmentioned,theseerrorscanchangeanditishighlyrecommendedtoredeterminethem
inthefollowingsituations:
• Beforetheinstrumentisusedforthefirsttime.
• Beforeeveryhighprecisionsurvey.
• Afterroughorlongperiodsoftransport.
• Afterlongperiodsofworkorstorage.
• Ifthetemperaturedifferencebetweencurrentenvironmentandthetemperatureatthe
lastcalibrationismorethan10°C(18°F).
