Thisisasimpletestthatdeterminesifachargingsystemisfunctioning.Ittells
youifthechargingsystemhasanoutput,butnotitscapacity.
1.UseadigitalmultimetertosetDCvoltsandconnectthepositive(+)
multimeterleadtothepositivebatterypostandnegative(-)multimeterlead
tothenegativebatterypost.Recordthebatteryvoltage.
2.Keepthemultimeterleadsconnectedtothebatterypostsandstartthe
engine.Thebatteryvoltageshoulddecreasewhiletheengineiscranking,
thenmustincreaseoncetheengineisrunning.
Note:Dependingupontheconditionofthebatterychargeandbattery
temperature,thebatteryvoltageincreasesatdifferentratesasthebattery
charges.
3.Starttheengineandrunitathigh-idlespeed(3,300to3,500rpm).Allowthe
batterytochargeforaminimumtimeof3minutesandrecordthebattery
voltage.Afterrunningtheengineforaminimumtimeof3minutes,thebattery
voltagemustbeminimum0.50Vhigherthanthatoftheinitialbatteryvoltage.
