optionalwirelesshourmeterkitincludesanadditionalrelay.Therelayplugs
intothewirelesshourmeterwireharness.Therelayandwirelesshourmeter
diodearetiedtothemainwireharnessbehindthebattery.Atagnearthewire
harnessrelayconnectororthecolorofthewiresleadingtotheconnectorcan
beusedtoidentifyeachrelay.AlloftherelayscurrentlyusedontheFieldPro
5040machinehaveve(5)terminals.Thenumberofterminalstherelayhas
determineshowtherelayshouldbetested.
IdentifyingtheRelaysandtheirFunctions
TheStartrelaysuppliespowertothestartersolenoid.Whenthekeyswitchis
intheSTARTpositionandtheappropriateinterlocksareinpositiontostart
theengine,thehourmeter/controllerprovidesapathtoground(lowside
switch)toenergizethestartrelaycoil.
TheChargerelayprovidesapathfortheenginealternatortosupplythe
machinecontrolcircuitsandtochargethebatteryoncetheenginehas
started.ThechargerelayisenergizedbythekeyswitchwhenintheRUNor
STARTposition.
TheNeutralrelaycombinesthesignalsfrombothneutralswitchestoasingle
inputforthehourmeter/controller.Therelaycoilisenergizedwhentheright
sideneutralswitchisintheNEUTRALposition.Whentheleftsideneutral
switchisintheNEUTRALposition,powerpassesthroughtherelayswitch
andontothehourmeter/controller.Usingtheneutralrelayinthismanner
ensuresthatbothneutralswitchesmustbeintheNeutralpositionbeforethe
hourmeter/controllerwillallowtheenginetostart.
TheoptionalWirelessHourMeterrelayisusedtosupplypowertothe
wirelesshourmeterfrom2differentpowersources.Initially,thewirelesshour
meterispoweredandtherelaycoilisenergizedbythestartercircuitwhen
thekeyswitchisintheSTARTposition.Then,powerfromthefuelsolenoid
circuitcrossestheswitchedrelaycontactstopowerthewirelesshourmeter
andkeeptherelaycoilenergizedwhenthekeyswitchisreleased.Adiodein
thecircuitpreventsthe2differentpowersuppliesfromcolliding.Thewireless
hourmeterrelayisusedasa“latching”relay.
TestingRelayswith5Terminals
RefertoFigure72forthisprocedure.
1.Parkthemachineonalevelsurface,setthekeyswitchtotheOFFposition
andremovethekeyfromtheswitch.
2.Disconnectthegroundcableatthebattery;refertoRemovingandInstalling
theBattery(page6–29).
3.Lowertheoperatorcushionandlocatetherelaytobetested.
4.Disconnectthewireharnessconnectorfromtherelay.Checktherelay
andtheharnessconnectorfordamageorcorrosionandcleanorrepair
ifnecessary.
Note:Priortotakingsmallresistancereadingswithadigitalmultimeter,short
themetertestleadstogether.Themeterwilldisplayasmallresistancevalue
(usually0.5ohmsorless).Thisresistanceisduetotheinternalresistanceof
themeterandtestleads.Subtractthisvaluefromthemeasuredvaluefor
thetestedcomponent.
5.Usingamultimeter,verifythatcoilresistancebetweenterminals85and86is
from71to88ohms.
