4.4 Acoustic Communication
A beautiful feature of a receiver is the ability to communicate with it while it is deployed. This section covers
the main tasks that would be performed when communicating with a receiver. A screen is shown with each
step, but the buttons you need to press are explained in section 1.5.5. A transponding hydrophone must be
connected to the VR100-200 receiver for two-way communication.
When performing these tasks in air, keep in mind that the distance the acoustic signals can travel is greatly
reduced in air and the caged section of the hydrophone should be within 200 mm (8”) of the hydrophone on
the receiver.
4.4.1 Establish Acoustic Communication
Acoustic communication between a VR100-200 receiver and a receiver
requires a transponding hydrophone to be attached to the VR100-200. The
steps listed below are taken to establish acoustic communication.
To start any of the operations that follow (scanning for devices, adding or
removing devices, setting hydrophone power), select “Transpond” in the main screen (right selection button).
4.4.1.1 Auto scanning for devices
Use the Auto Scan feature to automatically detect devices in the area. Auto Scan starts with a Global Wakeup
signal (69 kHz only) and then sends an initial search command based on “Min # of devices” (searches for
multiple until at least one receiver is found. If any pings are received (i.e. collisions) it may increase the
“listening” time and resend the search command. This repeats as long as no receivers are heard from, up until
the listening time corresponding to the “Max # of devices” is reached or zero pings are heard.
STEP 1
Select “Auto Scan” (#1) in
the main screen.
STEP 2
Wait again while the VR100-200
listens for the units in the area to
respond. A count-down (“T-x”
where x is the seconds) is again
shown on the screen.
STEP 3
If the number of receivers found
does not match the expected
number and you want to repeat
the scan, Select “Rescan”.
Otherwise, you can press “View”
to view a list of the units that
responded along with the over-all
distance from the hydrophone to
the receiver.
