2.3 Data Transfer between Test Bed and PUMA Open System
Analog signals (voltage/current) are recorded by sensors on the engine test bed
(directly at/in the engine). The signals are transferred to the F-FEM-CON where
they are converted into digital signals and passed on to the PUMA Open system
via the IEEE1394 bus.
In the PUMA test bed workstation, control algorithms are used to calculate new
demand values from the measured actual values and to transfer these to the
output channels. At the F-FEM-CON, the digital demand values are converted
into analog quantities (current/voltage) again, e.g. to control a throttle actuator.
Data transfer between test bed and PUMA Open system:
The time-synchronized acquisition of the measured values from various
measuring modules is a particularly important feature of this type of high-resolu-
tion, fast analog data acquisition with digital evaluation. It is ensured by using the
IEEE1394 bus system with real-time capability in combination with a voltage
controlled quartz oscillator (VCXO). A clockmaster (which is selected automati-
cally in the system) synchronizes all other F-FEM modules via their PLL (phase
locked loop).
In this way, the distributed system is phase locked and time-synchronous!

to/from the PUMA Open system.
3..... F-FEM-CON – various sensors and actuators of the engine or dyno are

4..... Engine test bed – analog signals (engine speed, vehicle speed) are
measured by sensors fixed at/in the engine.
Information
This data transfer will only work if all components are correctly installed and cali-
brated.
