Introductiontobiodieselfuel
FattyAcidMethylEster(FAME)biodieselfuel,called
biodieselfuelinthefollowingparagraphs,consistsofa
familyoffuelsderivedfromvegetableoilsthatproducers
treatwithmethylesters.
Therearetwomainbiodieselfueltypes:Rapeseed
MethylEster(RME)andSoybeanMethylEster(SME).
RMEisablendofrapeseedandsunowermethyles-
ter.RMEisthepreferredcropinEurope.SMEisthe
preferredcropintheUnitedStates.
Biodieselfuelisarenewablealternativefuelsource.Its
useanddevelopmentispromotedworldwide,especially
inEuropeandintheUnitedStates.
NOTICE:ItisimperativethatyoucheckwithyourCASE
CONSTRUCTIONdealertolearnwhichbiodieselfuel
blendCASECONSTRUCTIONapprovesforuseinyour
engine.Beawarethattheuseofbiodieselfuelblends
thatdonotcomplywithASTMD6751orEN14214could
causeseveredamagetotheengineandfuelsystem
ofyourmachine.Theuseofnon-approvedbiodiesel
fuelblendsmayvoidCASECONSTRUCTIONWarranty
coverage.
Biodieselfuelblendsusethefollowinglabelstoindicate
thepercentageofbiodieselfuelintheblend:

B5:indicatestheblendof5%biodieselfueland95%
dieselfuel.
•
B7:indicatestheblendof7%biodieselfueland93%
dieselfuel.
•
B20:indicatestheblendof20%biodieselfueland
80%dieselfuel.
•
B100:indicates100%biodieselfuel.
Biodieselfuelhasseveralpositivefeaturesincomparison
withdieselfuel:
•
Biodieselfueladdslubricitytothefuel.Additionallu-
bricityisbenecialinmanycircumstances,particularly
asfuelscontainlesssulfurandaromatics.
•
Biodieselfuelhasagreatercetanenumberandburns
morecleanly.
•
Biodieselfuelproduceslessparticulatematterandre-
ducessmokeemissions.
•
Biodieselfuelisfullybiodegradableandnon-toxic.

D7467providesspecicationsfordieselandbiodiesel
blendsfromB5toB20.
•
EuropeanDieselFuelSpecicationEN590allowsupto
7%biodieselsince2009.Europeanfuelsuppliersare
allowedtouseupto7%biodieselfuel(B7)tosupply
thenetwork.
Thefollowingstandardsapplytopurebiodieselfuel

blendstock(B100)formiddledistillatefuels.
NOTE:ASTMupdatedASTMD6751toimprovethe
qualityofbiodieselinthemarketplace.

methylesters(FAME)foruseindieselenginesand
heatingapplications-Requirementsandtestmethods
Beforeproducerscanconvertrawoilintousablebiodiesel
fuel,itmustundergotransestericationtoremoveglyc-
erides.Duringthetransestericationprocess,theoilre-
actswithanalcoholtoseparatetheglycerinfromthefator
vegetableoil.Thisprocessleavesbehindtwoproducts:
methylester(thechemicalnameforbiodiesel)andglyc-
erin(abyproductusuallysoldforuseinsoapsorother
products).
NOTICE:CASECONSTRUCTIONonlyapprovestrans-
esteriedbiodieselfuelblendsthatcomplywithASTM
D6751orEN14214.
NOTICE:Non-transesteriedfuelsmadefromrapeseed
oilorsimilarhighoilcontentcropsincludecold-pressed
biodiesel,cold-pressedoil,StraightVegetableOil(SVO),
ormoregenerallyunrenedvegetableoilsusedas
motorfuel.Becausethesetypesoffuelarenottrans-
esteried,theydonotfulltherequirementsofASTM
D6751orEN14214.Thereisnorecognizedquality
standardavailableforthesetypesoffuel;therefore,
CASECONSTRUCTIONDOESNOTAPPROVEthe
useofcold-pressedbiodiesel,cold-pressedoil,Straight
VegetableOil(SVO),ormoregenerallyunrenedveg-
etableoilsasmotorfuelatanyblendinanyCASE
CONSTRUCTIONproduct.
