Gilson 157/159 UV-VIS Detectors User’s Guide Safety-3
Safety
Safety
Solvents
Observe safe laboratory practices when handling solvents. If dangerous liquids are used, adequate protection
such as proper ventilation, safety glasses, etc., should be used.
Refer to the Material Safety Data Sheets for the solvents before use.
Toxicity
Organic solvents are toxic above a certain concentration. Ensure that work areas are always well ventilated. Wear
protective gloves and safety glasses when working on the detector.
Flammability
Organic solvents are highly flammable. Since tubing can detach from fittings and allow solvent to escape, it is
prohibited to have any open flames near the detector.
Self-Ignition Point
Only use solvents that have a self-ignition point higher than 150°C under normal ambient conditions.
Autozero
Perform an autozero each time you exchange the solvent.
Solvent Tray
To avoid damage from leaks, always place solvent bottles in a solvent tray on the device.
Leaks and Clogged Tubing
Regularly check for leaks and clogged tubing. Test back pressure without a column.
