4.6.3.2.5 UPC-E Code - Additional Verification Criteria
The UPC-E Code is a reduced version of the UPC-A Code. The EAN 8 Code always contains only 8
characters. If a decoder is adjusted accordingly, such a code can be extended by the corresponding
number of zeroes in order to obtain a 13-digit EAN-13 Code from the EAN 8 Code.
In the UPC-E symbology, the extension from 6 characters to 12 characters is already incorporated in
the decoding algorithm. A conventional bar code scanner will always be able to display and evaluate
the code format of a normal 12-place UPC-A Code extended to 12 characters when a 6-place UPC-E
Code is read.
REA bar code verification units always display only the actual 6 decoded characters of the code. Later
versions will display the code extended to 12 characters.
The meaning of the properties is identical to that in EAN-13 Code. In contrast to the EAN-8 Code, the
UPC-E Code allows the attachment of an Add On code.
The factory preset is: "Retail" and "no add-on."
