six-digit character sequence as well as a verification character.
This verification character is just calculated from the 6 previous characters without the dash. The code
always concludes with a "*" as a stop character.
The ratio (the relationship of narrow to wide bars) is indicated at 1:2.5 in the nominal and is permitted
and verified with a tolerance from 1:2.0 to 1:3.0.
The specification for verification of PZN codes furthermore requires a light source with red light and
with a wavelength of 670 nm. For this reason, it is urgently advised to use only color combinations that
can also be easily read by red light scanners (630 nm to 680 nm). The REA ScanCheck 3n always
uses a laser light source with a wavelength of 670 nm. The aperture should equal 6 mil. The code size
X is permissible between 0.187 mm and 0.450 mm. In the nominal size of a PZN Code with a module
size of X=0.25 mm, a minimum code height of 8 to 20 mm is required. The text "PZN" must always be
indicated in the plain text line but may never be encoded in the bar code.
4.6.3.3.8 Codabar - Additional Verification Criteria (Optional)
Codabar is a very old code symbology that is used in the pharmaceutical industry
and in photography labs. It is no longer current and should not be used for new applications.
Codabar can use a verification character but does not have to.
The verification character is formed according to Modulo 11 and verified by REA ScanCheck 3n if the
selection box is activated.
With the ANSI selection box, size ratios between the narrow and wide bars between 1:2.5 and 1:3.0
are permitted if the module width is under 0.5 mm. The ISO standard allows ratios between narrow and
wide bars of 1:2 to 1:3 in any case without the restrictions as with ANSI.
