PG - Price or weight CD - Symbol verification character check
Each single or double letter represents a character in the code.
Please note that the designations JAN Code and IAN Code are just different names for the EAN Code.
4.6.3.2.3 UPC-A Code - Additional Verification Criteria
The UPC-A code is the forerunner of the EAN code. It allows the encoding of 12 characters.
The EAN-13 Code, developed later, enables the expansion of the encryption to 13
characters.
The foremost goal in doing so was to ensure compatibility of both code types. By introducing a new
character set for the left code half, it was possible to encrypt the 13th character there in the 6
characters. The value of the 13th character is determined from the change of character set for the left
code half. If there is no change in the character set (character set A), this is always a UPC-A code. If it
is decoded as a 13-character code, the 13th character is always the "0" for a UPC-A code. If the code
is encrypted as an EAN code, the 13th character must always consist of the characters 1 through 9
and never "0."
The properties and meaning of the properties are identical with those of the EAN 13 Code.
If used as instore code, it is specified that the 12th character must have the value "2." If the UPC-A
code is decoded with all 13 characters, the leading character "2" must always be decoded as "02."
The REA ScanCheck 3n decodes the complete information with 13 places. For that reason, the leading
character in the left screen is shown with "02" instead of "2."
This takes into consideration that the UPC code in application as instore code always has only one
prefix character. All other details are identical to the description of the properties of the EAN -13 Code
(see Chapter 4.6.3.2.2).
4.6.3.2.4 EAN-8 Code - Additional Verification Criteria
The EAN-8 Code is a short version of the EAN-13 / UPC-A Code, but with 8 characters
instead of 13 or 12. It is intended particularly for
use on small products.
The content of the properties is identical to that of the EAN -13 Code (see also Chapter 4.6.3.2.2).
In the case of the EAN-8 Coide, however, no Add Ons are permitted as in the case of EAN-13 and
UPC-A Code.
Furthermore, the EAN-8 instore code always represents only one fixed article number.
A variable attachment for price or weight indicators is not specified.
For such requirements, the EAN-13 Code or UPC-A Code must be used.
