2. Install one piston pin clip in the pi ston.
3. Oil the pi ston pin with assembly oil or fresh
engine o il and in stall the piston pin in the pi S lOn
unlil it s end extends slightly beyond the in si de of
the boss ( Figure 175 ).
4. Place the piston ove r the co nn ecting rod.
R emembe r that the arrow on lOp of the pis ton
( Figure 176 ) mu st point toward the fr ont of the
en gi ne.
CAUTION
Wh en installing the pis ton pin ;n Step
5, do 1101 push the pin in 100 far or the
pi ston pin clip installed in Step 2 will
be fo rced into th e pislon mela/,
destroying (he clip grool'e and
loosening the clip.
5. Line up the piston pin with the hole in the
connecting rod. Pu sh the piston pin into the
connecting rod. It ma y be necessary to m ove the
piston around until the piston pin enters the
connec ting rod. Do not use force during
installation or damage m ay occur. Pu sh the piston
pin in until
it touches the p in clip on the other s id e
of the pi ston.
6. If the pi ston pin does not slide easil y. use the
homemade tool used during rem ova l. but eliminate
th e piece of pipe. Pull the pi ston pin in until it
stops.
7. After the piston is installed. recheck and make
sure that the arrow on t op of the piston ( Figure
176 ) is pointing toward the front of the engine.
NOTE
In the " e.rl step, install lhe seco nd clip
wilh lhe gap away from lhe CUIOUI in
lhe piston.
8. In sta ll the seco nd piston pin clip in the groove
in the pi ston. Make sure bo th piston pin clips arc
seated in the grooves in the piston.
9. Check the installation by rocking the pi slO n
back and fo rth around the pin axis and from si de-
to-side along the axis. It sho ul d rotate freely back
a nd forth. but nOI from s id e-to-side.
1 0. Insta ll the pi ston rings as desc ri bed in this
chapter.
II. In stall the cylinder and cy linder head as
described in thi s chapter.
