As you
remOl
't
a part from
Ihe
shaft,
set it
in
one
of
the depressions in
Ihe
same position from which it was
remOl'ed. This is an easy way (0
remember the correct relationship
of
all parts.
I.
If
not cleaned
in
the Preliminary
In
spection
sequence,
place the assembled shaft into a large
can
or
plastic bucket and thoroughly clean with
so
lven! and a sliffbrush. Dry with compressed
ai
r
or
leI
it
s
it
on rags
to
dry.
2. Slide off the thrust
wa
sher.
3.
Slide off the 1st gear.
1st
gear bushing and thrust
washer.
4. Slide off the 3rd gear.
5.
Remove
the
circlip
and
sp
lincd
washer.
6.
Slide off the 2nd gear and 2nd gear bushing.
7.
Slide off
th
e splined lockwasher.
8.
Rotate the spl
in
cd
washer in either direction
to
disengage the tangs from the grooves on the
trans
mi
ssion shaft. Slide
off
the splined washer.
9.
Slide
off
the 4th gear.
10
. Remove the circlip.
11.
Check each gear for excessive wear. burrs,
pitting
or
chipped
or
missing teeth (A. Figure 48).
Make sure the lugs (
8,
Figure 48) on the gears are
in
good condition.
12.
Check the 1st and 2nd gear bushings for
excessive wear. pitting
or
damage.
13
. Inspect the shift fork-la-gear clearance
as
described under Internal Gearshift Mechanism
in
this chapter.
NOTE
Defec/il
'e
gears should be replaced.
It
is a good idea

replace the mating
gear
on the coumershaft el'en
th
ough
it may not show
as
much wear
or
damage.
