Use an ohmmeter and perform the following:
a. Check for continuity between the commutator
bars
(I.jgu

44). There should
be
co
ntinuity
(indicated
re
sistance) between pairs
of
bars.
b.
Check
fo
r continuity between the commutator
bars and the shaft
(F
ig
ur
e 45). There should
be
riO cont
inu
ity (infinite resistance).
c.
If the unit fails either of these tests, the starter
assembly must be replaced. The armature
cannot
be
replaced individually.
5.
Use
an

a. Check for
continuity between the starter cab
le
terminal and the starter case. There should
be
continuity (indicated
re
sistance).
b.
Check
fo
r continuity between the starter cable
terminal and the brush wire
terminal; there
should be
flO
co
ntinuity (infinite resistance).
c.
If the unit fails either
of
these tests, the starter
assembly must
be
replaced. The caselfie
ld
coil
assembly cannot
be
replaced individually.
