I. Remove the swing arm as described in this
chapter.
2. Remove both dust seals and washers
if

have
not already fallen off during the removal sequence.
3.
Withdraw
th
e pivot spacer a
nd
pivot

ll
ar
fr
om
the
fr
ame.
4. Clean
a
ll
parts in solven! and dry thoroughly.
NOTE
There are no factory specifications
for
the outside diameter
of
the
pi,
'o
l
spacers or
pi\
'ot
collar.
5.
Inspect the spacers and the pivot co
ll
ar
for
abnormal wear.
scratches or sco
re
marks. Replace
if
necessary.
NOTE
Iflhe
spacers
and
the pivot collar art!
replaced. the needle bearing
at
each
end must also be replaced at the
SlInIe
lime.
6.
In
spect the needle bearings as follows:
n.
Wipe off any excess grease
fr
om the needle
bearing at each end
of
the swing arm.
b.
Turn each beari
ng
with
yo
ur
fingers; make
sure they rotate smoot
hl
y.
The needle bearings
wear
ve
ry slowly and wear is very difficult to
measure.
c. Check the rollers for
ev
idence
of
wear, pilling
or col
or
change (a bluish tint indicating heat
from lack of lubrication).

NOTE
Al
ways replace both needle bearings
even
th
ough only one may be worn.
7.
Check the welded sections (
Figure
56) on the
swing arm for cracks or fractures. Replace the
swin~
arm if necessary.
8.
Inspect the pivot points (
Figur
e 57) at the front
of
the sw
in
g arm for wear or damage. Replace the
swing arm if necessary.

In

wear or damage. replace if necessar

. Before installing the pivot colla r and spacers,
coat the pivot collar. spacers and both needle
bearings
with molybdenum disulfide grease.
