Step3:Testthealternator.
Useamultimetertoperformthefollowingstepstotestthealternator:
1.GotoPreparingforTroubleshootingand/orT esting(page22)andfollowthestepslisted.
2.Removethebatterycovertoaccessthebatteryattherearofthemachine.Withtheengineoff,measure
the12Vdcbatteryvoltage.Itshouldbe12.5to12.8volts.
Note:Aspartofthisstep,verifythatthebatteryterminalsandcableclampsarecleanandnotcorroded.
Note:Ifthisreadingis12.4Vdcorless,thealternatormaynotbeproperlychargingthebattery.Itisalso
possiblethatthe12Vdcbatterycouldbebeginningtofail.
3.Starttheengine.
4.Measurethebatteryvoltagewhiletheengineisrunning.Itshouldbehigherthan12.8volts.Readingsof
13.8to14.5voltsaretypical.
5.Shutofftheengine.

Thevoltagereadingsweregood.GotoStep4.
Fail
Thevoltagereadingswerenotgood.GotoStep5.
Step4:Testthewiringharness.
