Eclipse Edge User Manual
As the number of Portal PCs likely to be connected to the NMS LAN at an Eclipse site
is small, the address range can be kept small. Bear in mind that if all addresses are
assigned, a subsequent Portal PC DHCP
4
connection will not be possible - not until
the lease-time on an issued address expires (nominally 30 seconds after an
assignment disconnection).
When considering the address range, bear in mind that where there are two or more
DHCP configured Eclipse terminals on the NMS LAN, the server address range on
each should be different and non-overlapping, so that there is no potential for the
devices trying to issue the same IP address. While this is unlikely to cause a problem
for a Portal connection, good practice dictates that each device should support a
unique range of addresses.
However, the range of addresses is typically large for the number of different Portal
PCs that are ever likely to be connected within the lease time. There will normally be
a minimum of 253 LAN-specific IP addresses
5
available so even if the address range
is extended to 10 IP addresses per Eclipse device, there is no potential for insufficient
address availability, either to issue or being available for Portal PC connection.
Figure 4-20 shows a typical Networking screen and its DHCP server configuration
prompts.
The IP address range is set to provide a non-overlapping range with any other
LAN-connected and DHCP-enabled Eclipse radios.
A green tick indicates a valid range setting.

Procedure
1. Click Enable DHCP server and check the check-box to the right side of the
address range entry lines.
4
It would still be possible to secure an Ethernet connection by entering a LAN compatible address in the TCP/IP
properties window on your Portal PC, providing the address entered was not the same as an address assigned to
another currently connected PC.
5
The host portion of an IP address will normally have 253 possible addresses; 255 less 2.
