4. LOC mode
a.
To
Engage LOC mode
Tune in
localizer
Station
Set Directional Gyro Course Card
to
published ILS
runway
heading and select HDG
Switch
to ON.
Engage
LOC
mode by selecting VOR-LOC
Switch
to LOC and
Autopilot
NAV
Switch
to ON.
b.
Operation of LOC mode
lf
LOC needle is off-scale. the airplane
will
turn
until
the Directional Gyro heading is
within
30°
to
45°
of
Course Card setting. This heading
will
be
maintained
until
LOC needle begins to move off
of
its stop. lntercept angle
will
gradually decrease
until
LOC
needle is centered and
aircraft
heading
is
the
same
as
Course Card setting.
To
track exact center
of
localizer beam. D.G. Course
Card
should be turned to align it
with
D.G. Heading
Card
to
efiminate effects
of
crosswind and gyro
precession.
When
the
Autopilot
is coupled to
COM-NAV
equip-
ment (in tieu of
only
NAVequipment},
LOC
mode is
automatically neutralized
whenever
microphone
button is depressed.
Autopilot
then
reverts to HDG
mode (maintains setting of D.G. Course
Card)
until
the
microphone
button
is released.
NOTE
localizer
mode
of
the
Autopilot
is
to
be used
only as an aid
in
flying
the
localizer beam
of
an
ILS.
lt
is
not
to be used
without
normal
pilot
cross-reference to basic navigational
instru-
mentation.
