IntroductiontoFattyAcidMethylEster
(FAME)biodiesel
FAMEbiodiesel,calledbiodieselfuelinthefollowingsec-
tion,consistsofafamilyoffuelsderivedfromvegetable
oilstreatedwithmethylesters.
Therearetwomainbiodieselfueltypes:Rapeseed
MethylEster(RME)andSoybeanMethylEster(SME).
RMEisablendofrapeseedandsunowermethylester,
andisthepreferredcropinEurope.SMEisthepreferred
cropintheUnitedStates.
Biodieselfuelisarenewablealternativefuelsource.Its
useanddevelopmentispromotedworldwide,especially
inEuropeandintheUnitedStates.
NOTICE:Youremissionscontrolsystemiscompatible
withupto5%biodieselfuel(B5).Beawarethattheuse
ofbiodieselfuelthatdoesnotcomplywiththestandards
mentionedinthissectioncouldleadtoseveredamageto
theengine,fuelsystemoraftertreatmentsystemofyour
machine.Theuseofnon-approvedfuelsmayvoidCASE
CONSTRUCTIONWarrantycoverage.
Biodieselfuelcanbeusedtorundieselenginesaspure
biodieselfuelorwhenblendedwithstandarddieselfuel:
•
B5:indicatestheblendof5%biodieseland95%diesel
fuels.
NOTICE:NeverusebiodieselblendshigherthanB5.
Biodieselfuelhasseveralpositivefeaturesincomparison
withdieselfuel:
•
Biodieselfueladdslubricitytothefuel,whichisbene-
cialinmanycircumstances,particularlyassulfurand
aromaticsareremovedfromthefuel.
•
Biodieselhasagreatercetanenumberandburns
cleaner.
•
Biodieselproduceslessparticulatematterandreduces
smokeemissions.
•
Biodieselisfullybiodegradableandnon-toxic.
Dieselandbiodieselfuelspecications
TIER4FINALdieselfuelspecicationsarecoveredby
thefollowing:
•
ASTMD975,StandardSpecicationforDieselFuel
Oils.(15ppmsulfurmaximum.)
Biodieselblendsarecoveredby:
•
UnitedStatesDieselFuelSpecicationASTMD975al-
lowsupto5%biodieselsince2009.UnitedStatesfuel
suppliersareallowedtouseupto5%biodieselfuel(B5)
tosupplythenetwork.
•
UnitedStatesBiodieselFuelSpecicationASTM
D7467providesspecicationsforbiodieselblends
fromB6toB20.
Purebiodiesel(B100)specicationiscoveredbythe
followingrequirements:
•
ASTMD6751-Standardspecicationforbiodieselfuel
blendstock(B100)formiddledistillatefuels.
Beforerawoilcanbeconvertedintousablebiodiesel
fuel,itmustundergotransestericationtoremoveglyc-
erides.Duringthetransestericationprocess,theoil
reactswithanalcoholtoseparatetheglycerinefrom
thefatorvegetableoil.Thisprocessleavesbehindtwo
products:methylester(thechemicalnameforbiodiesel)
andglycerine(abyproductusuallysoldforuseinsoaps
orotherproducts).
NOTICE:BiodieselfuelsapprovedforuseintheCASE
CONSTRUCTIONequipmentmustbetransesteriedand
complywiththeNorthAmericaStandardASTMD6751.
NOTICE:ColdPressedBiodiesel,ColdPressedOil,
StraightVegetableOil(SVO),ormoregenerallyunre-
nedvegetableoilsusedasmotorfuel,arefuelsthatare
normallymadefromRapeseedoilorsimilarhighoilcon-
tentcrops.Thesekindsoffuelarenottransesteried,so
theydonotfulltheASTMD6751requirements.Thereis
norecognizedqualitystandardavailableforthesetypes
offuel.ThereforetheuseofColdPressedBiodiesel,
ColdPressedOil,StraightVegetableOil(SVO),ormore
generallyunrenedvegetableoilsusedasmotorfuel
areNOTAPPROVEDatanyblendinanyCASECON-
STRUCTIONproduct.
NOTICE:Anyengineandfuelinjectionequipmenttted
toaCASECONSTRUCTIONvehiclefoundtohaverun
withanyblendofNON-APPROVEDfuel(fuelnotfulll-
ingthespecicationdescribedintherequirementASTM
D6751)willnolongerbecoveredforWarrantybyCASE
CONSTRUCTION.
Biodieselfuelusageconditions
Youmuststringentlyfollowthebiodieselfuelusagecon-
ditions.Incorrectapplicationofthebiodieselfuelusage
conditionscouldleadtoseveredamagetotheengine,
fuelinjectionequipmentandaftertreatmentsystem.
Themainconcernsrelatedtooperationwithbiodiesel
fuelsare:
•
Filtersandinjectorblockagecausedbypoorfuelqual-
ity.
•
Wearandcorrosionofinternalcomponentsduetowa-
tercontent,whichaffectslubricity.
•
Deteriorationofsomerubbersealingcompoundsinthe
fuelsystem.
•
Biodieseloxidation,whichcanleadtotheformationof
depositsthatcanharmthefuelinjectionsystem.
